Back to School Packet


This packet is designed to give you all of your "need to know" information to be ready for the first day of school. Please note that the information is in an A to Z format for your ease in locating the information you are looking for. We appreciate you taking the time to read through the Back to School packet. Here is a simple PDF checklist.

After School Care

Our Afterschool Care programs offers structured activities, snacks and homework time for students. Information can be found on the Afterschool Care Program page of our website. Online registration is also available via this page. All fees will be paid via FACTS.

Athletic Forms & Registration

Each fall, students in grades 5 - 12 who wish to participate in athletics must complete a sports physical. Forms for these physicals are available under the Athletics tab. Registration for all fall sports is also available on the Athletics page.

Back To School Ice Cream Social

Each August our community gathers together to kick off our school year with one another. This evening is filled with fun, football and fellowship. Come join us on August 25th to meet new friends and reacquaint with old ones. Ice cream will be served and everyone is encouraged to bring their Blazer pride and watch our football team scrimmage in preparation for the season.

Calendar

There are several calendars for you to seek information from. All may be accessed through the CALENDAR button at the top of this page. The School Year Calendar 2017-2018 at the top is a PDF of our general days in session and days off. The Main Calendar on this page is our school calendar. This calendar can be viewed in a calendar or agenda format or sorted by category of events. You can also sync the calendar to your Google, Outlook, or Apple iCal. Our Blazer Athletic Calendar is also available online.

Drop Off

Drop off procedures can be found in the attached map. Please take time to review a few changes made for drop off locations this year!

Emergency Information

Every family needs to be sure to login to their ParentsWeb account and verify their information. Please be sure your contact information, email, medical and emergency pick up information is correct. Log into ParentsWeb, choose School Information, Web Forms then Family Demographic Form. It is important that this information is up to date and accurate for your child's safety and in case of emergency.

Immunizations

Students who need immunizations for the fall will receive a notification from Nurse Karin. All updated immunizations must be completed before the first day of school. Any questions? Please email Nurse Karin.

Lunch Information

Your child may bring a lunch, or may purchase a lunch from our dining service, Twelve Oaks Catering. For more information, please view the Twelve Oaks welcome letter and download a sample pre-order menu.

Mass Times for Classes

PK-2nd Grades: Wednesday 8:15am -9:00am
3rd-5th Grades: Friday 8:15am -9:00am
Middle School —Boys: Tuesday 10:00am -10:45am
Middle School —Girls: Thursday 10:00am -10:45am
High School —Girls: Tuesday 8:45am -9:30am
High School —Boys: Thursday 8:25am -9:10am

Medications

Students who need to take medications during the school day need to be sure that all medications are in their original container and all forms are properly submitted to support the medication. Any questions? Please email Nurse Karin.

Orientation

Middle School and High School students will participate in orientation activities on the first day of school, August 15 during regular school hours.

Parent Night

All parents will have the opportunity to hear about this coming year and all of the great things we have in store! Come to hear from our administration and teachers and get all of your questions answered to kick the year off with a strong start.

Parents Web

ParentsWeb is your virtual portal to the school. It contains a list of resource documents, including the parent-student handbook, the current academic calendar, permission slips, and much more. You may also view your child’s class schedule, grades, homework, progress notes, teacher contact information, and more. Please note that ParentsWeb also houses the school directory, which includes contact information for The Highlands families and school staff.

Retreats

Each year our Middle and High School students attend a retreat to start the year. These formation retreats are a great way for our classes to bond and grow. Retreats offer students an opportunity to begin to focus on the year and look forward to the challenges, fun and growth that await them. Mark your calendars today as these are mandatory!

Safe Environment

We have an obligation to keep all students safe. Therefore, all volunteers are required to complete the Safe Environment training and screening process. This program exists to help keep all of our children safe and secure on campus and school events. See the Safe Environment page for more details. Summer is the best time to get all of the steps taken care of so that you are able to volunteer and be on campus once school starts!

School Supplies

  PK3 - PK4: Child backpack to hold folder, nap pillow, nap blanket (we provide mat) and leakproof waterbottle.
  K - 5th Grade: All supplies are provided for students. Backpack needed (no wheels)
  Middle School: Supplies are provided by parents. Click here for a list of needed materials.
  High School: Supplies are provided by parents. Teachers will inform students of needed materials the first week of school.

Class schedules for Middle School and High School are now available on RenWeb / Parents Web. Log in, choose Student Information, then Schedules.

Summer Reading

We expect students to keep their reading skills sharp and engaged during the summer months. Students entering grades 1 - 12 are expected to complete required summer reading. Lists are provided below. We also encourage students to participate in summer reading programs at local public libraries for great incentives.

Teacher Assignments 

Teacher assignments for PK3 – 5th Grade is now available on RenWeb / Parents Web. Log in, choose Student Information, then Schedules.

Textbooks: Kindergarten – 12th Grade

Books can be ordered online through MBS Direct, and once on the MBS Direct website, you will select your child’s grade level to find a list of required books. High School and Middle School students will select their classes in order to see a list of books specific to their schedules. MBS Direct is offering FREE shipping August 8 & 9. Uniforms

Uniforms can be purchased from Parker Uniforms store in North Dallas on Alpha Road (near the Galleria), or ordered online. The Highlands dress code outlines appropriate dress by grade level and gender. You may purchase shoes from any store, provided that they comply with the dress code. All ties for high school are purchased from our front office for $10 each.

In the fall, we are rolling out a few adjustments to our uniform. Here are a few of the updates:
Sensible Seasons: Students will be able to choose which uniform options to wear based upon the weather. Is it 85 degrees in November? No problem, wear the warm weather options. Is it 45 degrees in April? No problem, wear the cold weather options.
PreK and K: Boys will be able to wear the polo year round. Oxfords will be optional. Parker will now carry the smallest sizes of the P.E. pants.
4th and 5th Girls: We are transitioning for all PK-5th to be in navy sweaters. This means for next year, 4th grade girls will wear navy sweaters. 5th grade girls will wear navy sweaters. (Burgundy sweater may be worn by 5th grade for 2017-18 only)
 Middle School is going ABLAZE: Middle school will wear red t-shirts and sweatshirts for P.E. (Grey shirts/sweatshirts can be worn for 2017-18 only) Girls will wear red sweaters. (Burgundy sweater may be worn for 2017-18 only) Boys will wear the grey sweater. (Navy sweater may be worn for 2017-18 only)
