Expanding Your Child's Education

General Network and Internet

The Highlands School network spans among five buildings on campus.  Each classroom and office is hard-wired to access the network.  Access to the network allows the staff, faculty and students to interact with server-based resources, to communicate and share files with each other, and to access the Internet.  Since the school's network is connected to the Internet it is protected by a Firewall.  Additionally Internet content filtering software has been implemented.  Server and client computers run Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system.

Student Lab

The student computer lab is equipped with twenty-four computers.  A scanner, digital camera, ceiling mounted projector, laser and inkjet printer, and surround sound speaker system completes this facility.  A sample of applications available on these computers includes:  Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Suite, Microsoft FrontPage 2002, HyperStudio 4.0, plus curriculum specific software for grades 1st - 6th.

Library

The library is equipped with four computers that may be used by the faculty and students.  Faculty and students have the ability to do research, look-up periodicals, or complete assignments.

Student Access

Each student, beginning in the 4th grade receives a username. This username along with a password allows access to the school's network.  Also each student is assigned his or her own folder.  Each student saves his or her work in this folder which is on a secure server that is backed-up weekly.  As a student enters high school he or she receives his or her own email account.  The email account enables the students to communicate with the faculty, peers and parents.
