Click and Pledge for the Annual Fund:

The Annual Fund Campaign is vital to the success of operating The Highlands School.  All of the funds raised go directly to support the annual operating budget.  Specifically, contributions fund financial aid and scholarships, academic programs, faculty enrichment and athletics.  As tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students, we must rely on the support of our families and friends to close the gap.

Our expectation is that each family contributes at least $1,000 and we achieve 100% participation. Our community is the foundation of our existence.  Be part of it and participate.

Contribute today and together we will attain our goal of $275,000!

Just click below and you can complete your contribution:

From the Guidance Counselor

High School

High school is a time for your teenager to establish his or her identity and prepare for the next step in life. But it’s also a time you will need to stay involved. How well your teenager does in high school can set him or her up for success in college and in future professions and careers.

Talk
Communication is critical. Start discussing future plans so you have a sense of the preparation required during the high school years. Let your student know you are there to help them with anything during these years. “The keyword here is ‘with,’” says Jennifer Vargo, family and community engagement coordinator for the Ohio Department of Education. “Everything you do for your child should be in support of their goals.”

“Parents don’t want to be that nag, but as much as students are trying to be autonomous and saying they don’t want your help, research says otherwise,” Vargo says.

Meet with Teachers and Guidance Counselors
Make sure you do this together, Vargo says. When meeting with school authorities, speak with them about your teenager’s goals, requirements and opportunities for getting started with a collegiate education. Discuss what kinds of classes your child can take in high school that will help him or her prepare for a career path.

Attend Events Together

Go to career-minded events, workshops and test preparation courses together, Vargo says. This way, you and your child are operating on the same information and can have a meaningful discussion about what they’ve learned.

Should your student already have an intended college-bound path, start attending college open houses to get better insight into potential colleges and programs. This will put both of you one step ahead when it comes to preparing applications.

Please note that we will have a new counseling tip each week from our Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Tracey Bonini.

Second Grade “Living Museum”

On Friday, April 11, the Assembly Hall of THS was transformed into a “Living Historical Museum” by our Second Grade classes.  Each student chose a historical figure from a unit of study and read a biography about that famous man or woman. After completing a reading log, making a poster , designing a museum brochure cover , and touring the Palace of Wax in Grand Prairie for some “hands-on” museum experience, the students were ready for the challenge of “becoming” their chosen history-making figure. After hours of rehearsal at home and at school, and dressed in elaborate period costumes, the children were ready to entertain the throng of museum-goers.  At the push of a convenient black button located on each figures hand, the characters sprang to life with amazing accounts of their past.  THS extends our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Lamers, Mrs. Hinton, and all of the Second Grade students for their preparation and hard work; and to the parents for their support of the project.

THS Middle School Competes In First Private School Interscholastic Association (PSIA) Play Competition

THS entry was,” The Arkansaw Bear”, We finished fourth in a very tough competition.  I thought the students gave 100% and I was very proud of their first efforts.  We had a wonderful time and several of our students won individual acting and technical theatre awards.

Jackie McCleneghen and Nick Engel were named to The All Star Cast, which is the highest award given at the competition.

Nick was a fill-in, as another student in the play had a family emergency and had to drop out of the cast the day before the play.  After one rehearsal, Nick was able to pick up the ball and run with it so to speak.

Carolyn Mackenzie won Honorable Mention to The All Star Cast.

Jessica Harvey and Fernando Soto won Rising Star Awards.

Maria Kus and Aaron Cole received Technical Awards for the Lighting and Sound.

Friday evening when we were eating dinner in a restaurant, the couple next to us remarked how polite and respectful our students were.  They also asked me where we were from.  I was proud to answer that we were from The Highlands School, in Irving, Texas.

We are already thinking about next year. Our students learned a lot during this experience and my heart is full of pride.

The cast members included:  Andrea Baquero, Zachary Engel, Nick Engel, Savanna Dinkel, Fernando Soto, Aaron Cole, Jessica Harvey,

Carolyn Mackenzie, Ana Munoz, Jacqui McCleneghen and Maria Kus.

Public Class: The Public Class serves several purposes. For the parent, this event demonstrates the child’s academic achievement as well as human formation, and ability to speak and think clearly in front of an audience. For the student, the Public Class provides an opportunity to synthesize concepts learned in each subject area, as well as to present him / her in a mature and professional manner. Because this event is held at the end of the school year, the preparation and presentation of the Public Class serves as a practical and engaging means for reviewing and communicating the intellectual as well as human aspects of the year’s curriculum.
