THS ALERT!  Boys Soccer Team Advances to State Championship Game

The Blazers defeated St. Thomas of Houston 7-0 in their semi-final game today!

The Championship Game is Saturday February 23rd at 1:00 p.m. We will play Grapevine Faith. The following is from Coach Holbrook:

“Grapevine Faith defeated the Blazers twice this year in district play.  Both times by a score of 2-0.

Juan Carlos Mayagoitia opened the scoring in today’s game within 21 minutes when his cross went off a defender for the first goal.  The score remained 1-0 at halftime, but it didn’t last for long.  Senior captain Jose Pecego scored 14 seconds into the second half off of a feed from David Lopez.  Jose scored again 5 minutes later on a free kick and then Jose go the hat trick 6 minutes later when Carlos Rocha crossed in a ball and Jose headed it in.  Carlos Rocha then added a goal when Juan Carlos touched a ball to him.  Andres Lopez took a deflection off the goalkeeper for the 6th goal and sweeper

Josh Treadway added the 7th on a penalty kick.

The shout out was led by stopper Franco Casale, goalkeeper Andy McCleneghen – 8 saves and Senior captain Shunkse Jeon at fullback.”

Directions are as follows: Field #1 of the University of Mary Harin-Baylor in Belton, Texas Map at www.umhb.edu.

The Highlands School will have the honor of receiving a visit from

Bishop Kevin Farrell this March 14, 2008

To show our gratitude and support for our Bishop, we wish to offer him a spiritual bouquet.  A spiritual bouquet is a list of different prayers or sacrifices that someone pledges to offer for the person who receives it.  Anyone who desires may add their amount of promised prayers (for example: attend Mass and offer it for him or her 5 days, pray 5 Hail Mary’s, etc.) or sacrifices (sacrifices could include anything from not gossiping to offering up a physical suffering) for the other person.

All students, faculty and their families are invited to click on this link to The Highlands School website and enter the number of Masses, visits to Christ in the Eucharist, mysteries of the rosary, virtuous acts that entail some small sacrifice and works of Christian charity or kindness that they promise to offer on behalf of Bishop Farrell.  Each person should enter the number that he or she actually plans to offer for the bishop.  We will add up the total number in each category and present this as a gift to Bishop Farrell on the day of his visit, so that he may feel encouraged knowing that so many prayers are being offered by our community on his behalf.

Please take a moment to participate in our spiritual bouquet, even if only to offer a single visit to the Eucharist or a single Mass for our bishop.  Not one is insignificant in the eyes of God.

PSIA: Congratulations to the students who participated in Private Schools Interscholastic Academic Decathlon this past Saturday. The Highlands School took first place in the event. The results are listed separately in this week’s edition of the “Weekly”.  We are very grateful to Mrs. Tammy Tran for her months of planning and hard work to prepare our students for the competition and for hosting the event. We are also grateful to the teachers and many parents who volunteered to make this a showcase event for our school. Please note that the Director of PSIA has already requested THS to host the event next year – We accepted! The next State Competition for 1st through 8th graders will be Saturday, April 26, 2009 starting at 8:00 a.m. on the campus of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Family Variety Show: Please support our Girls Variety Show next Friday night held in the Assembly Room at THS. At 7:00 p.m.

Fish Fry - We will have a Fish Fry in conjunction with the Family Variety Show from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria On Friday, February 29. We made the necessary repairs to the equipment that precluded last week’s Fish Fry during Parent/Teacher night.

Library Volunteers Needed - Joe Bieger has informed me that we have a need for some low tech assistance to cover and/or recover books. We have many new books in the library that not only need to be covered but catalogued as well.

This is an excellent opportunity for students, parents or friends of the school, who are looking for volunteer hours. It takes only a few minutes to train the volunteer.

If anyone is interested please contact Joe Bieger directly in the Library at ext. 222.

K-3rd Grade Field Day - Volunteers are needed to help with the K-3rd Grade Field Day on April 29th from 8:30-12:30pm.  If you are interested in helping to plan this exciting day, please email Leah Cannon at leahcannon@cityvet.com or call 214.801.6928.  You will be contacted with information for the kick-off meeting, which will take place in the next two weeks.  Thank you for your support.

Survey - Next week we will launch our Parent Survey.  This will be an online format through “Survey Monkey.”  We plan to attach the Survey to a THS Alert and place the Survey on our website.  Please give us your constructive comments.

Summer School – We will announce our Summer School schedule next week.  We are looking at a variety of one to two week courses in Math, Science, Languages, Writing and Sports Camps.  Courses will be taught by THS faculty.

Children on Campus after the School Day:  Parents, please supervise your children, especially the younger ones if you are on campus after normal school hours. We have been experiencing some problems with younger children left to play on the playground in front of the school when there are no adults present.

Click and Pledge for the Annual Fund:

The Annual Fund Campaign is vital to the success of operating The Highlands School.  All of the funds raised go directly to support the annual operating budget.  Specifically, contributions fund financial aid and scholarships, academic programs, faculty enrichment and athletics.  As tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students, we must rely on the support of our families and friends to close the gap.

Our expectation is that each family contributes at least $1,000 and we achieve 100% participation. Our community is the foundation of our existence.  Be part of it and participate.

Contribute today and together we will attain our goal of $275,000!

Just click below and you can complete your contribution: http://www.thehighlandsschool.org/ths/forms/fundraising/annualfunddrive.asp
