Dear Highlands’ School
Parents:
Directors’
Day is Thursday, March 13, 2008, when The Highlands
School will honor our Priests and Formation Directors for the Lower and
Girls’ Schools, Miss Denise Funke, and our formation director for the Boys’
School, Fr. Alfonse Nazzaro, LC. Honoring our Formation Directors for
their selfless service towards ensuring the Integral Formation of our
students is a tradition at all Legionary schools.
Fr.
Alfonse and Miss Denise are instrumental in fulfilling The Highlands
School’s mission of providing our children with a deep and solid formation
in the Catholic Faith: teaching our children to know our Faith, love
it and live it authentically. Their presence here directly and
significantly helps to form the unique character of The Highlands
School. Having made the radical commitment of their entire lives to
Christ and the Church, they are a constant daily witnesses to our children
and our families of the holiness and self-giving we are all called to
live. We desire to show them our gratitude and thus help our children
to value the importance these figures play in their lives.
Through
school activities on this day, teachers and students will have the
opportunity to show their gratitude to the formation directors and get to
know them better as friends and guides on the path to holiness. The
most important way we can help our formation directors is through prayer for
their needs and for their mission. Should you wish to help in a more
practical way to prepare for Directors’ Day, please contact Miss Adrienne
at ext. 241 or Br. Timothy at ext. 227 and Ricardo Avalos at ext. 351.
The Highlands School will have the honor of receiving a visit
from
Bishop Kevin Farrell this March 14,
2008.
To
show our gratitude and support for our Bishop, we wish to offer him a spiritual
bouquet. A spiritual bouquet is a list of different prayers or
sacrifices that someone pledges to offer for the person who receives
it. Anyone who desires may add their amount of promised prayers (for
example: attend Mass and offer it for him or her 5 days, pray 5 Hail
Mary’s, etc.) or sacrifices (sacrifices could include anything from not
gossiping to offering up a physical suffering) for the other person.
All
students, faculty and their families are invited to click on this link to
The Highlands School website and enter the number of Masses, visits to
Christ in the Eucharist, mysteries of the rosary, virtuous acts that entail
some small sacrifice and works of Christian charity or kindness that they
promise to offer on behalf of Bishop Farrell.
Each person should enter the number that he or she actually plans to
offer for the bishop. We will add up the total number in each
category and present this as a gift to Bishop Farrell on the day of his
visit, so that he may feel encouraged knowing that so many prayers are
being offered by our community on his behalf.
Please take a moment to
participate in our spiritual bouquet, even if only to offer a single visit
to the Eucharist or a single Mass for our bishop. Not one is
insignificant in the eyes of God.

Three
Legionaries take on new assignments
Fr.
Vincent Higgins, LC moves to Rome; Fr. Christopher Scroggin, LC and Br.
Steven Costello, LC move to Dallas.

Fr.
Christopher Br. Steven Fr. Vincent
Fr. Christopher
Scroggin, LC is joining the Dallas community as Superior, Local Coordinator
of Apostolate, Lumen Institute Chaplain and Highland School Board member. In all those roles, he succeeds Fr.
Vincent Higgins, LC, who is moving to Rome to assistant in the formation of
the seminarians at the center of Higher Studies (as Superior and member of
the Formation Team) as well as study a masters (licentiate) in Theology.
For Fr. Vincent, this
will be the continuation of an already distinguished formation. A native of New York, he was ordained on
Jan 2nd 2001, in Rome. His younger
brother, Fr John, is a diocesan priest with the Archdiocese of New York. He
received his bachelor’s degree in Physics at the University of Dallas, and
began doctoral studies in Physics at Purdue University. He holds degrees in
philosophy and theology from the Pontifical University Regina Apostolorum, in Rome.
Fr Christopher
Scroggin entered the Legion of Christ September 29, 1992. He was ordained a
priest November 25, 2004 in St Mary Major, Rome, Italy.
His studies have
included two years of Novitiate in Cheshire, Connecticut, and one year of
Classical Humanities. After four years of philosophy, he obtained his
licentiate at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina
Apostolorum in Rome. After three years of theology, he obtained a
bachelors degree at the aforementioned Athenaeum.
Along with his
studies, he has served three years as assistant to the director of the
Development Office for the Legion. He also completed two years assisting
our Territorial Director as an auxiliary secretary. He formerly worked here
at Royal Palm as assistant chaplain. He also conducts adult formation,
retreats, spiritual guidance and development work for the Legion in several
other cities in Florida.
Br. Steven Costello is
originally from Titusville, FL. He entered the Legion in 2000. After his
first five years in formation in Cornwall, Ontario, Connecticut, and Rome,
he is currently in his third year of apostolic internship. He began his
internship assisting Fr. Christopher in Florida.
World
Affairs Council’s WorldQuest Academic Competition
The Highlands team
(Thomas Kleiner, Mukudzei Gumbo, Austin Bray, and
Robert Johnston) did
quite well on Saturday in the WorldQuest Academic competition at
S.M.U. They came in 15th out of 62 teams participating,
which is pretty good considering that we had one junior, three sophomores,
and no seniors, and this was their first time in this event. Even
better, now that these scholars are veterans at this, they will know what
to expect next year and will be even more likely to excel.
