From the Executive Director

Summer School: (Not for Credit) THS will offer a Summer School curriculum across multiple disciplines for the first time starting in June.  We will announce the curriculum in a separate THS Alert and post it on the website.

We are looking at a variety of one to two week courses in Math, Science, Languages, Writing and Sports Camps.  Courses will be taught by THS faculty.

THS Auction Saturday night will have a record attendance of 510. Thanks to Cris Hannis, Mrs. Lyn LaMothe, Denis Farinholt, our Auction Committee members and volunteers.

We are doing extremely well in our reenrollments and new applications in our Admissions Office for next year. Thanks to all families and friends of the school for sending us some outstanding referrals. Keep up the good work of telling the Highlands School story.

Thank you Lynda and Shawn Pingel for the new DVD player for our school.

Friday night the Girls Student Council presented a Family Variety Show in the Assembly Room. The girls put together a terrific night of fun and wholesome school community entertainment. Well done to all for making this a fun night.  Thanks to the “guest” faculty, staff, parent entertainers who put smiles on everyone’s faces.

The Highlands School Choir competed for the 3rd year in the TAPPS Vocal and Choral Competition.  The choir, comprised of 26 High School Students, competed in 12 events.  Of the 12 events, 10 received the highest grades possible which qualified

them for state competition.

This year marks the third year in a row that the choir has qualified for state competition; this is the most events we have taken to state competition thus far.

The repertoire performed included sacred music as well as pop/show choir numbers.  There were six entries from soloists.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Senior Colleen Ahern, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Gregory Ahern, is a winner in the 2008 Fireside Catholic Essay Contest about the importance of a Catholic Education – Colleen will receive a check for $500.00 and receive a plaque.

Adam Muller’s (THS Faculty Member) new book, Classical Rhetoric through Structure and Style, has been published by the Institute for Excellence in Writing.  The book is intended to be an advanced High School level continuation of Dr. Andrew Pudewa’s Structure and Style method, which we use for writing instruction at The Highlands. The text teaches the student to compose essays and arguments based on the Progymnasmata, the most enduring collection of rhetorical exercises in the Western Tradition.   A complete writing composition course, the book also contains numerous source texts from classical authors like Homer, Livy, and Shakespeare.

Directors’ Day is Thursday, March 13, 2008, when The Highlands School will honor our Formation Directors: Denise Funke and Fr. Alfonse Nazzaro, LC.  We honor them for their selfless service towards ensuring the Integral Formation of our students.

Their presence here directly and significantly helps to form the unique character of The Highlands School.  Having made the radical commitment of their entire lives to Christ and the Church, they are constant daily witnesses to our children and our families of the holiness and self-giving we are all called to live.  We desire to show them our gratitude and thus help our children to value the importance these figures play in their lives.

Through school activities on this day, teachers and students will have the opportunity to show their gratitude to the Formation Directors and get to know them better as friends and guides on the path to holiness.  The most important way we can help our Formation Directors is through prayer for their needs and for their mission.  Should you wish to help in a more practical way to prepare for Directors’ Day, please contact Miss Adrienne at ext. 241 or Br. Timothy at ext. 227 and Ricardo Avalos at ext. 351.

The Highlands School will have the honor of receiving a visit from

Bishop Kevin Farrell, Friday, March 14, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

To show our gratitude and support for our Bishop, we wish to offer him a spiritual bouquet.  A spiritual bouquet is a list of different prayers or sacrifices that someone pledges to offer for the person who receives it.  Anyone who desires may add their amount of promised prayers (for example: attend Mass and offer it for him or her 5 days, pray 5 Hail Mary’s, etc.) or sacrifices (sacrifices could include anything from not gossiping to offering up a physical suffering) for the other person.

All students, faculty and their families are invited to click on this link to The Highlands School website and enter the number of Masses, visits to Christ in the Eucharist, mysteries of the rosary, virtuous acts that entail some small sacrifice and works of Christian charity or kindness that they promise to offer on behalf of Bishop Farrell.  Each person should enter the number that he or she actually plans to offer for the bishop.  We will add up the total number in each category and present this as a gift to Bishop Farrell on the day of his visit, so that he may feel encouraged knowing that so many prayers are being offered by our community on his behalf.

Please take a moment to participate in our spiritual bouquet, even if only to offer a single visit to the Eucharist or a single Mass for our bishop.  Not one is insignificant in the eyes of God.

Click and Pledge for the Annual Fund:

The Annual Fund Campaign is vital to the success of operating The Highlands School.  All of the funds raised go directly to support the annual operating budget.  Specifically, contributions fund financial aid and scholarships, academic programs, faculty enrichment and athletics.  As tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students, we must rely on the support of our families and friends to close the gap.

Our expectation is that each family contributes at least $1,000 and we achieve 100% participation. Our community is the foundation of our existence.  Be part of it and participate.

Contribute today and together we will attain our goal of $275,000!
