From the Executive Director

Our special thanks and gratitude are extended to Karen Ward, Jane Moore, classroom teachers and the students for their efforts at last Sunday’s Christmas show.  We would like to thank Cecelia Williams and her committee for the behind-the- scenes work.  We also appreciate the efforts of Band Director, Ms. Isela Tautges.

We would also like to thank our coaching staff for the basketball clinic held last Saturday. We had 17 students attending. Those numbers will continue to grow as people learn about our facility. Well done to Coaches Trevino, Breaux, Hamilton and Castro.

Words cannot express the appreciation from our faculty and staff for all the hard work our parents have done for the past several weeks for the 3rd Annual Christmas Purse Program. It was a tremendous success! Thanks to Andrea Trejo and her committee who coordinated the event and to all the parents who contributed.  We had 128 families participate this year, enabling each faculty and staff member to receive $140 at the Faculty/Staff Christmas Party held on Wednesday, Dec. 12th.   Thank you for helping to show our teachers and staff just how much they are appreciated!

Our thanks to Terri Baum and her committee for organizing the Winter Formal.

Thanks to the Women of Regnum Christi for the 2nd Annual ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ celebration this past Wednesday. Thanks to the Oseguera family and their committee.

Repeat: After School Policy:  We encourage students to remain after school to work with teachers in their classrooms or participate in extracurricular activities. On the other hand we have a number of students remaining after school who are not assigned to an authorized academic or extracurricular activity.   The Parent/Student handbook specifies that all students must leave campus by 4:15 p.m. on school days. Students who remain after school and are not participating in an authorized school activity will be directed to After-Care (Grades K-6) or the computer lab (Grades 7-12).  Charges for after care at the published rates will assessed.

After School Policy:  Cancelled Athletic Event: In the event of a cancelled scheduled practice, game, match or meet, the coach will ensure parents are notified and that children will be assigned to a study hall or the coach will remain with the students until the parent arrives or transportation home is arranged. Parents will NOT be assessed charges for aftercare in a cancelled event situation.

Repeat: Athletic/Team Uniform Policy:  Authorized athletic team shirts will only be allowed on Mondays. This policy is effective immediately and will remain through the rest of the academic year.  Only those students who are actively participating in the sport, authorized by the Coach will be allowed to wear UNIFORM athletic shirts. Only wear the complete school uniform all other days.

Auction Shirt Policy:  If your family sells 20 raffle tickets, you may wear your “spirit wear” up to six (6) times during the school year.  “Spirit Wear” dates are:

          January 14, 2008             January 28, 2008            February 4, 2008

          February 11, 2008           February 3, 2008            Mach 3, 2008

Senior Michael Behl was an Honorable Mention selection in the 2007 TAPPS Division IV, All State Football team as a Wide Receiver (WR).  He becomes the first Highlands WR ever selected to the All State team and the 10th All-State Highlands football player overall.  Both Noah Eshleman (Linebacker) and Michael Behl (WR) will compete in the Tom Hillary DFW All Star Game this Saturday, December 15th at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Worth Nolan High School.

The boys basketball team is currently ranked 12th by the TABC and Dallas Morning News for Small Private Schools, at 7-3.

Congratulations to the Middle School Boys Soccer team for two consecutive victories.

Christmas Break Schedule: The school will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Dec 26-28 and Jan 2-4.

Congratulations to 4th and 5th grade boys.   Both classes gave their time and energy to help the less fortunate during this Advent season. The fifth graders spent several hours on the Feast of St. Nicholas at the Buckner Center for Humanitarian Aid, sorting and boxing more than 600 pairs of shoes to be shipped to orphan children all over the world.

On December 11, the fourth graders volunteered at the North Dallas Food Bank, packing 300 pounds of food for the hungry poor and preparing snack bags for children who would otherwise have nothing to eat over the coming weekend. We commend the boys for their generosity and thank their teachers and parents who made these valuable experiences possible.

A Celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism.  On December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, four children, members of the Johnson family, received the Sacrament of Baptism in The Highlands Chapel.  Payton Nicole, Ashton Merritt, Maddox Alexander and Merritt Christopher we celebrate with joy your new life in Christ!

Everyone is invited by Vocation Action Network to the Third Sunday of the Month Family Adoration for Vocations, this Sunday, December 16, 2007, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Highlands School Chapel.  Father Frank Formolo, LC, Chaplain at The Highlands School will lead us with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and he will give a short personal testimony of his Vocation!  This is an incredible Advent opportunity for families! Hope to see you there!   Questions?  Contact:  Alden or Connie Kielhorn, 972-570-9129.

AMERICAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION RESULTS:  In November, all of the 7th and 8th grade students at The Highlands School participated in the AMC-8, a math contest that challenges each student with problems that are new, different, and "outside of the box."  June Chang had the top score at our school and will receive the School Winner Pin.  Congratuations to the following students who will receive award certificates for achieving one of the top three scores in their classes:

Click and Pledge for the Annual Fund:

The Annual Fund Campaign is vital to the success of operating The Highlands School.  All of the funds raised go directly to support the annual operating budget.  Specifically, contributions fund financial aid and scholarships, academic programs, faculty enrichment and athletics.  As tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students, we must rely on the support of our families and friends to close the gap.  Our expectation is that each family contributes at least $1,000 and we achieve 100% participation. Our community is the foundation of our existence.  Be part of it and participate.

Contribute today and together we will attain our goal of $275,000!
