THS Weekly
December 14, 2007| Issue #16

From the Executive Director

The priests, consecrated, faculty and staff want to wish everyone in The Highlands School Community a Merry Christmas and a joyous Happy New Year.

This has been a terrific first half of the school year for The Highlands School. One need only browse through the archived “Weekly’s” to see brief reminders of all the accomplishments of our students who are living integral formation in the classrooms, on the athletic fields, on the stage, in other extra-extra-curricular activities, and giving back to local communities and churches through various apostolates.

Work of Heart Award.  Alina Maldonado, our High School Spanish teacher, is the recipient of a Work of Heart Award.  Congratulations to Mrs. Maldonado and many thanks to those out there who nominated her.

Thanks again to our Christmas Purse parents for the gift cards we received today for Starbucks.

We appreciate everything our parents have done this year to make our school better.

Our special thanks to the CHALLENGE CLUB (Las Colinas) ~ Served over 50 children on December 8th with a Traditional  Christmas Posada at St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store.   Our THS girls provided over 70 gifts for the children; entertained them with singing, skits, crafts and snacks.  Truly a gift of Apostolic Action!

PSAT scores are being sent home with students on Thursday, December 20th.  Scores and test booklets are included, take the time to review your answers to improve your skills and better understand the PSAT for better test results.  Please see the section from the Guidance Counselor at the bottom of the weekly for access to some outstanding free college prep websites.

Click and Pledge for the Annual Fund:

The Annual Fund Campaign is vital to the success of operating The Highlands School.  All of the funds raised go directly to support the annual operating budget.  Specifically, contributions fund financial aid and scholarships, academic programs, faculty enrichment and athletics.  As tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students, we must rely on the support of our families and friends to close the gap.  Our expectation is that each family contributes at least $1,000 and we achieve 100% participation. Our community is the foundation of our existence.  Be part of it and participate.

 Contribute today and together we will attain our goal of $275,000!

Just click below and you can complete your contribution: http://www.thehighlandsschool.org/ths/forms/fundraising/annualfunddrive.asp

From the Guidance Counselor

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Because your high school student took the PSAT/NMSQT in October, she/he has FREE access to My College QuickStart™, a free online personalized planning kit based on their test results. Students are able to take the next steps towards college with these unique features:

·         An online score report, including projected SAT score ranges, state percentiles and the power to sort answer explanations by difficulty and by question type;

·         A customized SAT study plan;

·         Personalized lists of colleges, majors, and careers.

·         Access to MyRoad™ - a college, majors, and careers exploration tool.

Your student will have online access to My College QuickStart until she/he graduates high school.  Please encourage your student to take advantage of this exciting tool to help him/her explore college and career opportunities after high school.

Also, as part of My College QuickStart, students get access to MyRoad to help them plan their futures in a productive and engaging way:

I.D. Me offers students the opportunity to take interest assessments and a personality-type assessment to learn more about themselves, their interests and strengths, and the college majors and careers that may suit them.

Explore Majors contains in-depth profiles of sixty-seven academic fields, representing 175 instructional programs. Each profile offers an overview of the major, areas of study, an outline of the typical academic path to fulfilling the major, popular careers related to that major, and perspectives from real students studying in their respective fields.

Find a College offers comprehensive college search tools which students can use to search for colleges and universities.

Research Careers consists of an array of career articles--covering over 450 occupations-- arranged by industry.  Each article provides detailed information about the requirements for working in that career, the typical compensation, possibilities for advancement, and perspectives from real people working in that career.

My Plan is a personalized area for students to record, track, and manage their information --such as courses taken, jobs held and activities in which they have participated. Students can also track their interests and goals and keep a journal that chronicles their progress during this exciting time.

Insights is an online magazine with rotating content bringing to life the educational and career paths that individuals choose and the subjects currently debated across the disciplines.

Students register for My College QuickStart by visiting: www.collegeboard.com/psatextra and entering the access code printed on their official PSAT/NMSQT paper score report along with some identifying information.

Sincerely,

Tracey Bonini, LMSW
